Inlays and Onlays Overview
Classified somewhere between a dental filling and a crown, inlays and onlays can repair a damaged tooth. Used on the back teeth, a dental inlay covers the concave center of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's upper, rounded edges. Like dental crowns and fillings, inlays and onlays can be made in several materials — porcelain, metal, and composite resin. General and cosmetic dentist Dr. Dieter Burr can help Cocoa, FL patients better understand tooth-colored fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays so they can make the right decision about how to treat their tooth at Advanced Dental Care.

Best Candidates for Inlays and Onlays
An onlay or inlay is a good choice if you have a chipped tooth or a large cavity that is too big for a filling, but doesn't need the entire coverage of a crown. In your dental exam, Dr. Burr can use your digital x-rays to determine the best procedure for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is selected, he will explain the available materials that will best meet your requirements. You might also discuss whether you would prefer a direct restoration (an inlay or onlay made at our office with CEREC technology while you wait) or an indirect restoration made at a dental laboratory.
What To Expect with Inlays and Onlays
After applying numbing cream or local anesthesia to the needed areas, Dr. Burr will start by removing areas of decay. Stronger methods of sedation can be used if you have anxiety or a strong gag reflex. Once the tooth is cleaned, impressions will be made of the tooth. If you are receiving a restoration made in a lab, a temporary filling will be placed until it is prepared. Once your onlay or inlay is ready, Dr. Burr will carefully place and bond it onto your tooth. He may polish the edges or adjust the fit so your tooth is properly covered and feels comfortable.
Inlays and Onlays Recovery
If only local anesthesia has been used, you will be able to leave after the procedure to continue your normal day. You may have temporary discomfort, inflammation, or sensitivity for several days after your inlay or onlay is placed. Please contact Advanced Dental Care in the event you have any concerns after your procedure. Your onlay or inlay needs to be taken care of like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. You should schedule annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at Advanced Dental Care so Dr. Burr can assess the health and wear of your onlay or inlay. With good care, it should last for many years before replacing or repairing.
Inlays and Onlays Insurance Coverage
Inlays and onlays are a common treatment for dental decay and other problems, so it's usually covered by dental insurance. We will contact your insurance provider to determine your specific coverage before calculating your out-of-pocket costs. Dr. Burr can customize your treatment with different materials to match your budget. In your consultation, Dr. Burr will go over cost estimates and payments we accept, including medical financing.
