To keep yourself healthy, you should be proactive with dental problems by getting them caught before they become painful issues. This is why it's important to schedule a dental examination for you and your family. While teeth are examined superficially during a cleaning, a dental examination provides a much more in-depth analysis. Dental exams at Advanced Dental Care assess your total health and oral hygiene, including decay, cancer, and other oral diseases. Seasoned dentist Dr. Dieter Burr will assess the need for treatments or advanced restorations plus check the bite and jaw for problems. A series of x-rays can be taken to get better insight into the health of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. If you live in or near Cocoa, FL, schedule a dental examination at Advanced Dental Care.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer includes any abnormal cell growth in the mouth, including the jawbone, lips, gums, throat, salivary glands, and tongue. Every exam at Advanced Dental Care includes an oral cancer screening to look for early signs including sores, inflammation, lumps, and lesions. Dr. Burr will also palpate the jaw and throat for abnormalities. If any areas of concern are found, a biopsy may be performed or you will be referred to a specialist for further care.

Best Candidates for Dental Exam
Cocoa, FL patients of all ages should get an annual examination. Often, people think they are fine because they don’t feel any pain in their mouth. Many common issues like gum disease (the biggest cause of tooth loss) may not have symptoms you will be able to see. The earlier problems are caught, you will have more treatment options and a better chance at a full recovery.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that babies go to the dentist before their first birthday. This can help with concerns like teething, using pacifiers, and baby bottle tooth decay. The team at Advanced Dental Care can talk to you about how to care and clean your baby's mouth so they start healthy habits early — this will also help them throughout their life. Dental exams are also vital for children as they get older as their mouth develops. While baby teeth will fall out eventually, Dr. Burr can watch for any development issues in the gums and jaw.
What To Expect
Your dental exam will start with an overall assessment of your tongue, gums, teeth, throat, inside your cheeks, roof of your mouth, and other oral checkpoints. This includes looking for signs of oral cancer. Dr. Burr or a member of his team will take digital images and screen for abnormal tissue in the gums. Dr. Burr will evaluate your head, neck, and jaw, including your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and bite while talking about any issues found and the best treatment. Dr. Burr will discuss any health concerns you have, prescriptions and supplements you may be taking, and how they might impact your oral health by causing dry mouth and tooth decay. Finally, he will examine any prosthetics you have, like crowns and dentures, to check the fit and wear.
How soon you need to return will depend on your oral health. If Dr. Burr does not identify any concerns, then the only follow-up would be to continue a regular dental health regimen including brushing and flossing twice a day, along with annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at Advanced Dental Care. If Dr. Burr does see an issue that needs treatment, options will be discussed and scheduled.
Since a dental exam is crucial to your health, it is frequently covered by dental insurance. Our office will contact your insurance to calculate your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. If you do not have dental insurance, Advanced Dental Care accepts many payment options, including medical financing. Dr. Burr can work with you to make sure you can afford good oral health.
