Best Candidates for Mouth Guards
A number of symptoms may indicate that you are grinding your teeth and/or clenching your jaw while you sleep. You might wake up in the morning with tightness and pain in your jaw, or a headache, and swelling in your lower face. Other indicators include loose teeth and/or fillings, worn down enamel on your back teeth, tooth sensitivity, and a receding gumline. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching at night are often caused by stress, but could also be the result of misaligned teeth, allergies, a sleep disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). As Dr. Burr is diagnosing bruxism, he will also attempt to ascertain the cause so your mouth guard may be combined with another treatment for more effective results. You are also a great candidate for a custom mouth guard if you play sports like football, soccer, wrestling, boxing, and hockey.
What to Expect with Mouth Guards
After Dr. Burr has determined that you are an ideal candidate, he will take impressions and digital x-rays of your mouth to create your custom mouth guards. Advanced Dental Care will send your specifications to a special dental lab where your mouth guard will be created with high-quality products. When your mouth guard is finished and sent back to our office, you will return to our office for a fitting. Dr. Burr might make minor adjustments so your mouth guard fits properly and comfortably. Dr. Burr will also give specific instructions on how to care for your mouth guard so it lasts for a long time.
Mouth Guards Follow-Up
In order for your mouth guard to work with maximum efficiency, we recommend that you wear it every night or while playing sports. Your mouth guard could diminish or eradicate the pain and dental complications caused by bruxism, but if it doesn't, please inform our staff so Dr. Burr can address other issues or try other options. It is also essential to wear during physical activities to help protect your teeth from injury. To help keep your oral appliance in pristine condition, you should properly clean your mouth guard prior to and after each use. We ask that you bring your mouth guard to all future dental appointments so Dr. Burr can adjust and repair the guard as necessary.
Mouth Guards Insurance Coverage
If you have been diagnosed with nocturnal bruxism or jaw clenching, some of your mouth guard might be covered by your dental insurance company. If you have dental insurance, our billing personnel can contact your insurance carrier to determine your cost and coverage. During your preliminary appointment, Dr. Burr can discuss cost estimates, with or without dental insurance, and payment methods. To help you afford your dental care, Advanced Dental Care can help you qualify for medical financing.
